EXCLUSIVE NAME-BRAND SURVEY: OTCs pharmacists recommend most

Prescription online

Monday, May 23rd, 2004

by HARRIS FLEMING, Jr.

As one of the most trusted groups of health professionals, pharmacists wield a lot of influence over patients' choices of over-the-counter medications.

As in years past, Drug Topics did a study of pharmacists' preferences when recommending OTC products to their patients/customers. Some 1,200 questionnaires were mailed to a random nationwide sample of pharmacists, 500 of whom were independents. The rest of the surveys went to pharmacists in chain drugstore and supermarket/mass-merchandiser settings.

The survey attained a response rate of 15%. The data were weighted to reflect the universe of store units as defined by the Drug Topics circulation list.

What follows reveals the OTC brands pharmacists said they recommend most often, ranked according to the percentage of pharmacists who recommend them. Only those products recommended by 10% or more of the pharmacists responding to our survey have been included. The percentages may add up to more than 100% due to multiple answers. Also, percentages are rounded to the nearest whole number. The survey focused exclusively on name brands and did not include private-label or store brands.
