Have we become stagnant?

As designers it is great to see great looking websites. It is wonderful to see more sites moving to web standards because the pluses greatly outweight the minuses. However, we are beginning to wonder if designers of the web have stopped trying to innovate other aspects of their sites like the navigation or overall structure. canadadrugstop.com

There may be an unlimited amount of ways to do a tabbed navigation system. Logically most people think that there are really only 4 places to place the navigation of a site: top, left, right, and bottom. On a two-dimensional screen it is really hard to think otherwise. However, does navigation always have to be separate from the content or can it become part of the content? The majority of sites will require a global navigation system along with a secondary and tertiary system, but do we automatically put the navigation by itself without thinking maybe there is a better way to present the navigation of our site?

Does every homepage have to have a welcome message? I know that on the web sometimes it is best to follow conventions, but how come we have already developed "rules" for a system that is still so young? The navigation of our company site was done because we were not only trying to be creative, but to also innovate with what little material we had. It's not possible to do this with every site, but why not try to at least think about how to do something different?

Aesthetics only become one part of the presentation of a website. The structure of a site is the other part. A different structure does not have to be different simply to differentiate it from the rest of the crowd, but maybe it will make things easier for the user. Scrivs changed the way we look at blogs.

With our site we thought it would be better for the user to only have to worry about one navigation system. One system with one purpose sounds easy enough to concentrate on so that is what we created. We want to make the web better and simpler to use and sometimes that just takes a different way of thinking. Sometimes you have to take chances with things and we have been fortunate that our clients have allowed us that freedom.

It is easy enough to talk about these things, but actions speak louder than words. Our company site was our first action and we will have many more to follow. You will see many new things with the 26 in 52 of 2004 project (website coming soon) because we are allowed to take those chances. And through the inspiration of Scrivs we have decided to document all of thoughts and ideas for each piece of the project so you can enter our heads. Would at least one person out there find this valuable?

With this:

happening, hopefully the level of competition gets stepped up a bit. Should be interesting to see what designs come from them.
